Riku Ruotsalainen’s (D.Sc., M.Sc., FRSA) primary research stream focuses on the early phases of innovation process where groups of actors develop new ideas. His research shows that in early phases most creative ideas die out. This ‘hidden potential’ in innovation explains why sometimes organizations and organizational fields do not prosper even though they are able to produce many creative ideas. Ruotsalainen’s ongoing research program aims to reshape how we see organizational innovation by showing the importance of early phases of innovation process, and the communicational, cultural, and relational dimensions therein. This research program has a lot of potential for providing process-based concepts through which we can rethink the theory of the firm and more specifically, the basic building blocks of strategic capabilities and core competencies of firms.
