Sustainable Minds

VU Amsterdam

During the 2017 Dies Natalis celebrations on October 20, the spotlight will be on VU Amsterdam’s profile theme Science for Sustainability. This year’s celebrations are entitled: Sustainable minds. Our agenda for change. How can VU Amsterdam contribute to solutions to sustainability issues? How can the way our teaching and research is organized help with this?

In his Dies Natalis Lecture, Pieter van Beukering (Associate Professor of Environmental Economics) outlines a strategic vision of sustainability for teaching and research, in which students, researchers and lecturers seek comprehensive answers to these key questions.

VU Amsterdam’s Writer in Residence, Bas Heijne, together with writers Lieke Marsman and Roos van Rijswijk, will discuss the way in which the sustainability debate is being conducted. What terms should you use to avoid talking over the heads of ordinary people?

Social commitment is one of VU Amsterdam’s core values. We express this in many tangible ways, one of which is the centralized Community Service Learning programme for our students. In his inspirational lecture, Robert Bringle – of Indiana University’s Center for Service and Learning – will challenge VU Amsterdam to make this programme a compulsory part of the curriculum.

In addition, the Teaching Talent Prize and the VU Amsterdam Innovation Award will be presented during the Dies Natalis celebrations.
