Educational activities in the field of entrepreneurship

In recent years, academic entrepreneurship education has shifted from the exclusive domains of business administration and economics to many other domains as well. The School of Business and Economics (SBE) of VU Amsterdam offers five courses for beta students.

These courses are based on three pillars:

The transfer of academic knowledge in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, during lectures and through the study of academic papers and booksThe development of personal entrepreneurial soft skills, which may contribute to entrepreneurial success, with interactive workshopsTo come from a business idea to a solid business plan, with the help of the adjusted Business Model Canvas approach and the study of an own real-life case
Scientific research is not an explicit part of our courses, however this important topic will be dealt with during the courses- directly and indirectly.

Entrepreneurship for Physicists (E4P)

The growing complexity and accelerating dynamics of the technologies that lie behind life sciences, pre-clinical studies, medical treatments, alternative and sustainable energy sources, innovative material, micro- and nanodevices and complex research projects in the high energy particle physics and astrophysics sectors, emphatically urge professionals to think, act, and communicate in an entrepreneurial way. This course ‘Entrepreneurship for Physicists’ (E4P) responds to this urge.

Entrepreneurship in Data Science and Analytics (EDSA)

The general aim of this course is to deliver knowledge about and insight in the relevance of entrepreneurship and innovation for the discipline of sciences as well as to develop entrepreneurial skills. Entrepreneurship is an increasingly important subject for students and professionals, also in the discipline of sciences.

Entrepreneurship in Human Movement Sciences (EHMS)

In recent years, academic entrepreneurship education has shifted from the exclusive domains of business administration and economics to many other domains as well. In the academic year 2010/2011, the subject of entrepreneurship was taught for the first time for master’s students at the former Faculty of Human Movement Sciences (VU Amsterdam). Since then, the course has become a popular elective for students in human movement sciences (and in other domains as well).

Entrepreneurship in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science (EAISC)

In the academic year 2018/2019, the subject of entrepreneurship is taught for the first time for students of the master Computer Science (joint degree of VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam) and the master Artificial Intelligence (VU Amsterdam), in the form of this elective Entrepreneurship for AI and CS (Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science).

Entrepreneurship for Biomedical Physics and Technology (E4BPT)

Entrepreneurship, defined here as ‘the creation, discovery and exploitation of value-adding opportunities’, is an increasingly important subject for students and professionals, not only in the disciplines of business administration and economics but also in other disciplines, like biomedical physics and technology. The growing complexity and accelerating dynamics of biomedical physics and technology emphatically urge professionals to think, act, and communicate in an entrepreneurial way.
