17th CIGAR Conference 2019

School of Business and Economics

Congres / symposium / seminar

On June 13-14, the 17th biennial conference of the Comparative International Governmental Accounting Research (CIGAR) Network will take place at VU Amsterdam. This conference is jointly organized by the CIGAR Network, the Amsterdam Research Center in Accounting and the Zijlstra Center for Public Control, Governance & Leadership. The organizing committee consists of Tjerk Budding (chair), Tom Groot, Bram Faber, Vinitha Siebers, and Patrizia Abinta.

The theme of the CIGAR conference is Alternative views on Public Sector Accounting and Financial Management. Scholars outside the domains of accounting and public sector (e.g., psychology, ecology) will be asked to give their opinion on our research field in the plenary sessions. Invited speakers include Ian Carruthers (Chair International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board), Ewout Irrgang (Vice-president Netherlands Court of Audit), Alfred Tat-Kei Ho (Professor of Public Administration in the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas), and Gerda van Dijk (Professor in Public Leadership).

The CIGAR PhD Seminar precedes the conference, in which PhD students are encouraged to present their work. The last day features a overview session on the current state of IPSAS and EPSAS. The conference will end with the CIGAR Network General Assembly. An additional feature is that, alongside the parallel sessions, there will be some special workshops, including a publishers’ forum and a workshop on how to effectively present your research to a scientific and non-scientific audience. Finally, the conference includes an option for a Practitioners’ Program, consisting of multiple workshops organized together with the Dutch ministry of Finance and the Netherlands Court of Audit about financial reporting reforms in Dutch government.
